Tournament History (05/02/10)

The first tournament was run in 1997. Whilst the main aim was to raise much needed funds, we thought that the way to attract good teams and to get them to come back each year was to provide a good standard of football. With that in mind it was decided that
• Matches should be as long as possible within the guidelines.
• Pitches should be as big as possible within the guidelines
• Good quality trophies should be presented to winners and runners up
• Qualified, independent referees should be in charge of all matches

In those days many tournaments had matches of 5 minutes that were refereed by managers and parents from the host club. We insisted on using referees from the local leagues with games being a minimum of 8 minutes.

Our principles have been maintained throughout the history of the tournament.

In May 1997 we decided to run a small tournament to prove to ourselves that we could provide a good standard tournament. The club was much smaller then and we ran 5 age groups just for the teams that we had at the time. That first year attracted 58 teams and we made a profit of just over £500 – Result!
The other notable thing was that we had to suspend play for an hour on the Sunday because of a thunderstorm!

The tournament grew each year and in 2000 we attracted more than 100 teams for the first time. That year we also received sponsorship from Age Concern and the Millenium Fund. In addition to the usual winners and runners up trophies, every player received a medal. Trophies were presented by Hazel Blears MP, The Mayor of Salford and Les Olive a former secretary of Manchester United.

The number of entries continued to rise with a record 141 teams in 2005

In 2003, 7 a side matches were introduced for the mini footballers aged 7-10

In 2004, the tournament was named after Frank Buckley, the Club’s first secretary and a founder member who sadly passed away earlier that year. Frank had also provided the inspiration for the first tournament.

The first real programme was produced and sold for the 2004 tournament and included quizzes for both Adults and Children.

Unfortunately, the 2007 tournament was cancelled due to the terrible weather which also affected many other Club’s efforts that year.

No tournament was held in 2009 due to the major maintenance and drainage work on the pitches but we will hopefully be up and running again soon.

The tournament has become a well known and respected and regularly attracts teams from far and wide including Birmingham, Chester, Cumbria, Liverpool and St. Helens as well as the more local Salford and other Greater Manchester districts.
